Among the Premier League clubs that voted against the early closure of the summer transfer window in England were Manchester United. The Red Devils were probably already feeling frustrated that they lost the vote considering their lack of success with striking a late deal for one of their many centre-back targets. The likes of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng have all been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent days but there’s no guarantee United will sign any of them before the window closes on Thursday night. However, they now face an even bigger issue with virtually no time to bring in a replacement: retaining the services of star midfielder Paul Pogba. The Daily Mail have revealed that the French World Cup winner’s controversial agent Mino Raiola is trying to engineer a deal for his client to join Barcelona.Because the transfer window on the continent doesn’t close until August 31, United now face the prospect of a four-week battle to hold on to one of their most popular stars.Pogba, it’s claimed by sources close to player, is open to joining the Catalan giants.

What Mourinho said about Pogba last month

The 25-year-old, who lit up the World Cup finals in Russia, has often flattered to deceive since returning to United from Juventus two years ago.

His working relationship with Mourinho has failed to flourish while World Cup suggested United’s manager should be doing more to bring the best out of the club’s most expensive player.

However, Mourinho disputed suggestions that it’s down to him to get the best out of Pogba. Instead, the Portuguese coach claimed last month, it was down to the player himself to fully focus on performing for Man Utd week-in, week-out.

“I don’t think it’s about us getting the best out of him, it’s about him giving the best he has to give,” Mourinho told ESPN last month.

“I think the World Cup is the perfect habitat for a player like him to give the best. Why? Because it’s closed for a month, where he can only think about football.

“The players are in a closed camp, isolated from the external world, from commercial compromises, and every possible influence.”

Mourinho's comments have angered Pogba

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Mail have now revealed that these eyebrow-raising comments went down “very badly” with the player.

The Times, meanwhile, add that Mourinho’s comments have ‘upset’ the flamboyant midfielder.

It seems Mourinho’s comments were yet another hammer-blow to the fractured relationship which currently exists between the two men.

Pogba is now tempted to leave United for Barça - and it now seems clear that Mourinho is one of the main reasons why.
