Manchester United’s transfer window has been rather underwhelming.

While Liverpool have spent lavishly and Manchester City have added Riyad Mahrez to their title-winning squad, Jose Mourinho has been left disappointed with United’s business.

The Portuguese coach informed the club of his desire to see five new arrivals when the window opened.

But with Thursday’s deadline fast approaching, the Red Devils have signed just three players.

And one of them doesn’t even have a major role to play this season.

Man United completed the signing of 35-year-old goalkeeper Lee Grant in a £1.5 million deal with Stoke City.

With Joel Pereira joining Vitoria Setubal on loan, Grant will serve as a backup to David de Gea.

Crouch reacts to Grant signing

Supporters won’t expect to see much of the experienced goalkeeper. Something bad has happened if he becomes a regular between the sticks.

But clubs need depth at the position and one man who is chuffed for Grant is his former Stoke teammate Peter Crouch.

Crouch has reacted to the move in his column for the Daily Mail, and his comments may surprise a few.

“I can’t talk about United without mentioning their signing of goalkeeper Lee Grant,” Crouch said.

“It has gone under the radar but it makes so much sense and I’d expect before long that he will be David de Gea’s No. 2.

“He is different class and he deserves to be at a club that will be expecting to challenge for honours.”

Crouch is clearly close to Grant. But to call him “different class” and to suggest he belongs at a club competing for titles is a stretch.

And there’s no guarantee that he will become De Gea’s No. 2, which Crouch appears to believe is inevitable.

Sergio Romero is the current backup and Mourinho showed how much he values the Argentinian by blocking his exit in January.

If all goes to plan, supporters won’t see any of Grant this season.
