Chelsea fans have made the same point about Ampadu

David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger partnered each other against City, but Gary Cahill is now back in contention after his appearance as a second-half sub against Lyon.

However, many Chelsea fans believe Sarri should start another of the club’s central defenders alongside Rudiger: Ethan Ampadu.

The 17-year-old, who made a handful of appearances for Chelsea last season, produced a commanding display alongside Andreas Christensen on Tuesday.

He was always in the right place at the right time, making blocks and interceptions and impressed everyone who tuned in to watch the game.

Some fans were even calling his display a John Terry-esque performance - and praise doesn’t come any higher than that for a young Chelsea centre-back.

A significant number of fans would prefer to see Ampadu line up against Huddersfield over either Cahill or Luiz, despite the fact he’s so young.

But the teenager, who has already been capped twice by Wales, proved that age is just a number against Lyon.

He looks more than ready for first-team football based on his performances over pre-season and clearly has an extremely bright future ahead of him.
