Manchester United have not had the transfer window that many would have expected. The Red Devils finished a whopping 19 points behind their Manchester rivals last season. Many expected them to splash the cash this summer given the huge points gap between the two clubs. But that has not materialised. Jose Mourinho was able to complete the signings of Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant, but many expected more from the club. With the window closing on Thursday, time is rapidly running out for Mourinho to strengthen further. The Portuguese manager has made it clear that he wants to make further signings, with a centre-back a priority.Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Harry Maguire are just three names that have been strongly linked to the club in the past few days. But, as things stand, Man United have made little headway in any of those named above.BBc Journalist Simon Stone has now provided the reason why in two tweets, and Man United fans are not happy with Ed Woodward at all.He wrote: "Chances rising of no @ManUtd signing. No bid for Alderweireld yet. Costs of Mina deal prohibitive. Boateng proposal was loan but that's now gone."Time for situation to change but who can they get who would make a difference - and at what cost? Jose spent £61m on Bailly/Lindelof."

He then tweeted: "Re signings. United have the money. As I understand it, they don't want to be drawn into paying big transfer and agents fees for players who are no better than the ones they have."

Really? The fact that Man United don't think any of their targets are better than what they currently have is laughable.

Man United fans quickly picked up on the tweet, and they weren't happy at all.

Much of the anger was directed at Ed Woodward, while many more stressed that their targets are much better than what they currently have, and that the club should be spending big to improve on last season's disappointments.

While there is a lot of doom and gloom surrounding Man United at the moment, one man who is optimistic about the upcoming season is Wayne Rooney.

The former Old Trafford great believes Man United can catch Man City next season, but they need one or two signings in order to do so.

"I think it will be difficult after the season they had last year," he said, per Sky Sports. "They [Manchester City] have been playing some great football.

"But I hope someone can catch them - it would be nice, so hopefully Manchester United can. I think maybe another signing or two.

"I am sure Jose (Mourinho) has been getting the team right. I know there has been a lot of talk about pre-season in the press but I am sure behind the scenes, Jose has been giving them the right amount of work.

"They have the game against Leicester on Friday so hopefully they can go one step further this year than second and try and get the title back."
