Manchester United’s summer transfer window is in real danger of turning into a disaster.

So far the Red Devils have only managed to sign three players: Brazilian midfielder Fred, Portuguese teenage full-back Diogo Dalot and 35-year-old English goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign a new centre-back before the transfer window closes in England on Thursday night and a number of high-profile names have been linked with moves to Old Trafford.

Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, Barcelona’s Yerry Mina and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld are all potential deadline-day signings for the Red Devils.

However, there’s a chance that none of them will arrive before the window slams shut.

Time is ticking down and United fans shouldn’t be surprised if Ed Woodward and co. fail to get any further signings over the line.

But once the transfer window closes, United still run the risk of losing some of their players - including want-away duo Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba - as overseas clubs are permitted to make signings up until August 31.

Mourinho's original plan for Pogba now looks awkward

Pogba, it has emerged, is keen on a move to Barcelona who, according to widespread reports, offered United £45 million plus Mina and Andre Gomes for the World Cup winner earlier this week.

United rejected this optimistic bid but Pogba is understood to be unhappy under Mourinho and determined to team up with Lionel Messi and Arturo Vidal at the Camp Nou.

Pogba has also dismissed claims that this speculation is a ploy to earn a more lucrative contract from Man Utd. It’s not about money, according to the 25-year-old.

However, it’s now emerged - per The Sun - that Mourinho had a plan in place for Pogba this season which may have convinced the France international that Man Utd is still the right club for him.

The United boss wanted to make Pogba the team’s star man, the report claims, and give him more of a leading role at the club.

That looks rather awkward now, doesn’t it?

It’s clear that Pogba is unhappy under Mourinho, who is presumably angry after learning of the Frenchman’s desire to leave Old Trafford.

Whether his original plan for Pogba still applies for the upcoming campaign following these latest developments remains to be seen.

The Sun’s report also reveals that Man Utd are furious not with Pogba but with Barcelona for lodging a late bid for their star midfielder.
