Manchester United's chase for Toby Alderweireld has been one of the most gruelling transfer sagas of the summer.

It's been no secret that Jose Mourinho has been chasing a new option at centre-back ahead of the new season with the likes of Jerome Boateng, Diego Godin and Yerry Mina linked with a move.

Time is quickly running out for the Red Devils, though, with Ed Woodward reluctant to be drawn into deals with an inflated price after splashing out on Eric Bailly and Eric Lindelof in the last two years.

Yet that hasn't stopped United fans from keeping their fingers crossed for a late approach for Alderweireld.

The Tottenham man's contract expires next year and Spurs risk losing him for a cut-price if they don't sell up soon, leaving supporters confused by a lack of action from United.

Struggles in Alderweireld deal

He looks an obvious target for United, too, with the Belgian proving a key asset to Mauricio Pochettino's side and boasting no less than four season's worth of Premier League experience.

Reports throughout the summer have indicated that disagreements over price and the potential involvement of Anthony Martial have led to such a protracted saga.

Nevertheless, Tottenham aren't safe from a United bid until the window officially closes on Thursday afternoon and it seems they're still anticipating an approach for their centre-back.

Potential player-plus-cash deals

That's not to mention the fact Spurs are believed to be open to the sell, if the conditions are to their liking.

And as the countdown begins, it seems United could be willing to offer some of their own players to ensure they sign Alderweireld on Deadline Day.

Sources close to both United and Tottenham have told ESPN that - although no formal bid has been made yet - that the north London club is braced for a last-minute approach.

Not only that but either Chris Smalling or Marcos Rojo could be included in a potential deal.

The Red Devils are certainly open to the sale of Rojo amid apparent interest from Everton, but want to keep him at Old Trafford unless another defender like Alderweireld is brought in.

Man Utd fans react on Twitter

The prospect of these two player-plus-cash deals has started to attract attention on Twitter, too, and United fans are more than enthusiastic about the deal. Check out the reaction below:

Whether it's last minute desperation or born from genuine consideration, supporters would happily lose either defender for the services of Alderweireld.

The whole situation sums up the chaos that has started to unfold at Old Trafford with their search for a centre-back extending all the way to the final day.

Almost miraculously, despite his contract situation, Tottenham are edging closer and closer to retaining Alderweireld and biding themselves time to recommence contract discussions.

It might take an offer including Rojo and Smalling to tip the balance in United's favour, but they're quickly running out of time and hope.
