Thibaut Courtois sparked a backlash on Twitter with his gesture at Real Madrid unveiling

Thibaut Courtois was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Thursday afternoon.

Months of speculation ensured Chelsea fans weren't too surprised when negotiations accelerated and the Blues looked to secure Kepa Arrizabalaga as his long-term replacement.

Although Keylor Navas has been a decent servant for Los Blancos, the club have struggled for a truly world-class goalkeeper since Iker Casillas was in his prime.

Real certainly have a top-level number one in Courtois who established himself as a staple at Chelsea across four seasons and won the Golden Glove at this summer's World Cup.

However, his exit hasn't been received overly well by both Chelsea fans and - of course - Atletico Madrid supporters.

Courtois unveiled at Real Madrid

Courtois posted a farewell statement on his Facebook page when the news broke last night, but was forced to remove the post after receiving abuse in the comments section.

Similarly, when John Terry sent his best wishes on Instagram, he disabled comments after derogatory comments started rolling in.

While some supporters have certainly taken things too far, it's easy to see why Atletico fans in particular are disgruntled with Courtois representing the Rojiblancos for three seasons.

Courtois kisses the Real badge

Fans have also been keen to note that Courtois was seen making X-rated comments against Real fans during his spell with their bitter rivals.

And now Courtois' official unveiling at the Bernabeu has caused even more of a stir with the Belgian making some interesting comments and choosing to kiss the badge.

That's right, less than 24 hours after making his move and having established himself at Real's city rivals, he went straight to the badge.

Not only that, but the Belgian noted: "I've never felt like kissing a club badge before until today."

That's got to hurt, Atletico fans.

He went onto explain at his unveiling: “I’ve never kissed the badge before, but I’ve done it here today because this is where I’ve always wanted to be.

"My big dream is to win a UCL. No one gave me assurances that I will start here. I must earn it. I don't know my shirt number yet.

"I have been a rival and I know what it is to face Real Madrid. Today I'm one of you. This is the best club in the world.”

If anyone was doubting why Atletico supporters are so angry, their discomfort is becoming increasingly understandable, even if Courtois probably has the best intentions.

Besides, there are many neutral fans who are simply cringing at the matter themselves.

As long as Courtois can deliver in the famous Real jersey, though, he'll be adored by his own supporters and that's all he'll be hoping for right now.
