Manchester United have endured a seriously frustrating transfer window this summer.

The Red Devils flew out of the blocks with the purchase of Brazil midfielder Fred, but the subsequent captures of Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant have done little to inspire at Old Trafford.

It hasn't been for a lack of interest in other players either with United fans teased by a multitude of transfers rumours ranging from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Gareth Bale.

In terms of recent weeks, the focus has been on Jose Mourinho's quest to bolster the club's defensive options and secure a new centre-back.

Supporters are starting to lose faith in Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly fell out of favour at the back-end of last season and Victor Lindelof has struggled in the Premier League.

Man Utd chase Godin

It's left the club chasing a great number of defensive options this summer with Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng regularly linked with a move.

However, it was Diego Godin who attracted the headlines on Deadline Day when Sky Sports broke the story that United had made an approach for the Atletico Madrid defender.

Kaveh Solhekol tweeted on Thursday morning: "Manchester United have contacted Atletico Madrid over possible deadline day move for Uruguay centre back Diego Godin."

Godin's agent used Man Utd

Shortly after, though, and the rumours simmered down with reports that Godin had personally rejected a move and that he had in fact signed a new contract in Spain.

The situation all seemed rather complicated until Sky Sports cleared up the situation and it seems Godin's agent used United to bag a pay-rise and new contract.

That's right, the player's team led on the Red Devils - despite Mourinho's apparent suspicions - to secure themselves an improve situation while United struggled for a new centre-back.

Check out the update below:

It will come as little surprise that rival supporters found the news rather amusing with United's misfortune somewhat compiling their struggles this summer.

After all the frustrations of pre-season so far, it's cruelly apt that their business would conclude by Godin's agent misleading them at the last minute.

Football fans react on Twitter

Take a look at the reaction here:

You've got to feel for United supporters right now.

Godin is rightly regarded as one of the best centre-backs in world football right now and despite his age, would have been a massive coup for Mourinho's side going forward.

There was a feeling that United needed to spend big this summer after not only coming up short to Manchester City last season but by an eye-watering distance at that.

And now it seems increasingly unlikely that Mourinho will get the centre-back he so badly desired, it's a huge blow for the club ahead of their third season under the Portuguese.

The fanbase if starting to grow tired of the 55-year-old and a first title challenge since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement seems to be a must.

If there is to be any success in 2018-19, though, Godin won't have anything do with it.
