It was yet another underwhelming summer in the transfer market for Newcastle United.Incredibly, Michael Owen - who joined the Magpies for £16m in 2005 - is still the club's record signing.Chi Onwurah, MP for Newcastle Central, recently urged Newcastle's owner to offer more support to manager Rafa Benitez and that this "should include investment in players, training facilities and community engagement".Martin Dubravka, Fabian Schar, Yoshinori Muto, Kenedy and Ki Sung-yueng, Salomon Rondon and Federico Fernandez have joined for a total of £23m.Meanwhile, £43m has been brought in from player sales. It's remarkable that Benitez - who spoke of his frustration throughout the summer - is still at the club.On Friday morning, Newcastle's unpopular owner Mike Ashley agreed to buy House of Fraser for £90m in cash.

Shearer reacts on Twitter

Legendary Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer quickly reacted to Ashley's new £90m purchase on social media.

The Match of the Day pundit jokingly asked: "What position does he play?"

Shearer nailed it - but, sadly, there's zero chance Ashley would spend anything close to £90m on a footballer.

The Premier League's all-time record goalscorer spoke seriously about the lack of funds at Newcastle's disposal earlier this week.

“Rafa is obviously angry because he was promised he would be given all the funds that were generated to spend on the team and that hasn’t happened," said Shearer, as per the Shields Gazette.

“I understand Rafa’s frustration totally and the fans’ frustration too.

“They work all week in Newcastle to spend their money and have a good time at the weekend.

"A good time is going to St James’s Park and seeing their team and being loyal and being supportive and having hope but they haven’t had that.

“They have a top manager and that will give me hope that they can avoid relegation this year. To finish tenth last year was incredible."

The three newly-promoted clubs have spent £190m between them - Benitez has got a massive job on his hands once again.
