It's been a week since Daniel Ricciardo shocked the Formula One world by announcing he will quit Red Bull for Renault at the end of the 2018 season.

Many have called Ricciardo out for switching teams purely for financial reasons, but others have sympathised with the decision, understanding his desire to separate himself from Max Verstappen's shadow.

Just as the dust is beginning to settle, former F1 driver Felipe Massa has said he understands the reason behind the Aussie's decision to switch teams.

The Brazilian retired from competition last year, following an illustrious career that saw 11 wins and 41 podium finishes.

The former Ferrari and Sauber driver said: "Daniel, like the rest of us, doesn't know what will happen with the Honda engines next year.

"But he is also not very happy with Max Verstappen. It's a risk, and it may or may not work out."

After reports a few months ago claimed Ricciardo would extend his deal with Red bull during the summer break, he then made a dramatic U-turn as Renault confirmed their latest addition last Friday.

In a statement released on the official Renault website, Ricciardo said: "It was probably one of the most difficult decisions to take in my career so far. But I thought it was time for me to take on a fresh challenge.

"I realise that there is a lot ahead in order to allow Renault to reach their target of competing at the highest level but I have been impressed by their progression in only two years and I know that each time Renault has been in the sport they eventually won."

Further rumours suggested Fernando Alonso would replace Ricciardo on the Red Bull team, but the Spaniard has since played down these reports.

On Twitter, he reacted with multiple laughing emojis, and a hashtag that included the words 'no thanks', after Christian Horner accused him of causing chaos at teams.

Ricciardo still has nine races remaining this season before he is able to link up with his new team.

Will he be able to add to his two wins so far in that time?
