Liverpool fans will hope that this season is the year in which they become consistent challengers for the Premier League title.

Barring the 2013-14 campaign, in which they came so close to being crowned champions, Liverpool have simply been targeting a top four finish.

But they can set their sights higher after an aggressive transfer window.

The Reds spent £167.9 million in total, the biggest expenditure of the 20 top flight clubs.

And while Jurgen Klopp may not be ready to admit it, many consider his side to be the best bet to rival Manchester City for the Premier League title.

They certainly enjoyed a better summer than Manchester United, who were left to reflect on an underwhelming offseason.

Jose Mourinho wanted to sign five players in total, including a centre-back, but he ended up with just three new faces at Old Trafford.

Neville's Man United or Liverpool answer

Having finished 19 points behind Man City last season, it’s easy to wonder whether the Red Devils have done enough to close the gap.

But club legend Gary Neville remains optimistic heading into the new campaign.

The pundit previewed the season for Sky Sports’ hugely popular Super 6 game on Friday when he was asked who will finish higher: Man United or Liverpool.

Neville didn’t hesitant when he delivered his response: “United.”

He continued: “When the dust settles, I still think Liverpool have got to prove that they are better than this Manchester United team over a season.

“And they could, but for me at this moment in time I’d say Manchester United.”

And there you have it. Did you really expect him to say Liverpool?

He makes a fair point by telling Liverpool to prove they can do it over the course of a 38-game campaign.

We know that they can beat anyone on their day - they defeated Manchester City three times last season.

But they also lost to Swansea, drew home and away against West Bromwich Albion and failed to beat Stoke and Burnley at Anfield.

Liverpool’s inability to beat the lesser teams cost them last year.

Neville will hope that not much has changed as he prepares for what promises to be a fascinating season of football.
