Manchester United kicked off the new Premier League season with a 2-1 win over Leicester City.
After a rather difficult summer, especially in recruitment, Jose Mourinho will have known the importance of starting the new campaign on a positive.
And a 2-1 victory, courtesy of goals from Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw, will serve to boost the confidence at Old Trafford.
Pogba was given the captain’s armband and he handled that responsibility excellently.
Mourinho admitted that the Frenchman was expected to last an hour after missing Man United’s pre-season but he played until the 84th minute before being taken off.
Man United supporters will hope that it’s a sign of things to come.
Left-back Shaw was also on the receiving end of praise from Mourinho at full-time.
Pogba's comments about Shaw
Much has been made of the 23-year-old’s relationship with Mourinho but there are reports that he aced the club’s pre-season fitness tests.
Shaw’s talent is clear for all to see, and he can make the left-back spot his own if he applies himself.
His teammates only want the best for him. That much was made clear when Pogba spoke to MUTV after the match.
“Luke Shaw, I want to say something,” Pogba said.
“He is someone who works very hard in training. He looks after himself, people criticise him.
“He didn’t have a lot of chances to play last season. He deserves respect, he deserves people to be happy for him.”
Well said, Paul.
Those are the words of a club captain.
Man United supporters have reacted by heaping praise on the World Cup winner for his classy comments.
'MUFC captain in the making,' Twitter user @iamscholes wrote.
Fans clearly want him to be the permanent captain.
The injury that Shaw suffered in 2015 stunted his development.
He was viewed as a potential world-class defender when he emerged at Southampton.
But that injury, combined with concerns over his dedication and fitness, have held him back.
Man United supporters are all desperate for this to be his revival season.
Can Luke Shaw reach the heights once expected of him? Let us know in the comments section below!
