It’s fair to say that tensions were high in the red half of Manchester during the summer transfer window.

After finishing a whopping 19 points behind neighbours Manchester City last season a raft of changes was required.

In particular, Jose Mourinho was desperate for reinforcements in defence and in central midfield.

The signings failed to appear in their droves though – Ed Woodward didn’t deliver on a centre back to leave the Red Devils looking short for defensive cover already.

One signing they did make was Fred – the Brazilian midfielder joined from Shakhtar Donetsk in June for a reported £60 million.

Many Manchester United fans are hoping his arrival can free up Paul Pogba, whose position in the midfield has been a conundrum throughout his Old Trafford career.

Fred made his first appearance in the curtain-opener at home to Leicester City.

Pinning their hopes on the newcomer, fans were eager to see how he’d get on.

United won the game 2-1, with Fred starting in the middle alongside youngster Andreas Pereira and captain Paul Pogba.
