Jesse Lingard tweets Paul Pogba after strange penalty run-up v Leicester

It’s been quite a year for Paul Pogba.

After a largely frustrating campaign with Manchester United – dropping out of the Champions League via Sevilla and losing the title to rivals City – the mercurial midfielder then reached the pinnacle of the game by winning the World Cup with France in the summer.

Pogba answered many of his critics and was clearly invigorated by the leadership role alongside N’Golo Kante at the heart of the French team.

After jubilant celebrations and a well-deserved holiday, Pogba was back to the day job for the Premier League opener against Leicester.

In keeping with his recent good fortune, United were awarded a penalty after two minutes, which Pogba duly converted.

The captain caught a few eyes as he took a bizarre run-up before dispatching the spot kick that seemed to go on forever.

One pair of eyes that he certainly caught were those of fellow Manchester United star Jesse Lingard.

Lingard wasn’t playing in the match as he isn’t yet ready following his run to the World Cup semi-final with England.

Partial to a dab or two, Pogba and Lingard have been close throughout the Frenchman’s time at Old Trafford, and Lingard felt the need to rib his friend on social media after the game.

The England star took to Twitter, which you can see below.

Lingard was a shining light in Russia, scoring one of the goals of the tournament against Panama on the way to England’s best finish since 1990.

Jose Mourinho will be looking forward to having his energy back into the midfield once he has regained full match fitness.
