Andres Iniesta divided opinion when he headed to Vissel Kobe in the J-League.

The 34-year-old ended a 17-year association with Barcelona in May, staying on the pitch by the centre-circle until the early hours of the morning following his final game.

It was expected that the midfielder would be a one-club man and his attachment to the Blaugrana was there for all to see on that night.

However, despite being ostensibly awarded a 'contract for life' in 2017, Ernesto Valverde was ultimately not going to incorporate him in his plans going forward.

Iniesta felt he had more to give and captained the Spanish national side out in Russia, even if La Roja's campaign proved to be underwhelming as they crashed out to the hosts on penalties.

There was very little time between the World Cup and the start of the new season in Japan and the number eight made his debut on July 22, coming on as a substitute and playing 30 minutes.

Of course, it's unlikely we're going to see peak Iniesta as he enters the twilight of his career and yet this weekend, he provided Kobe fans with a glimpse of what he can do with a superbly-taken strike.

Iniesta's still got it

Picking up pace as he drifted into the box, he received the ball with his back to goal, turned astutely, broke away from the defender and finished.

His technique is absolutely superb - you don't lose that with age.

Vissel Kobe could move up to fourth with a win.

As much as football romantics would have loved to see him hang up his boots with Barcelona, Iniesta deserves credit for embracing his new challenge.

Upon touching down in Japan, he promised he would "do my best to make my new challenge a success".

Having worked on his fitness in pre-season, perhaps he was right to seek out one last destination before calling it a day.
