It took just 75 seconds for Manchester United to be awarded their first penalty of the new Premier League season against Leicester City on Friday night.

Daniel Amartey's handball gave referee Andre Marriner no choice but to point to the spot, giving United the chance to take an early lead.

A squabble between captain Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez eventually saw the former put the ball down and fire emphatically past Kasper Schmeichel.

Clearly there was some confusion about who should take the penalty, with Pogba explaining afterwards that United don't have a designated taker at the moment.

"We don't really have one," said the Frenchman when asked the question. "The manager has names but after, it's how we feel.

"I decided to take it, I was one of the names and in the next game, I can leave it to Alexis, it's not a problem. It is just the win that is the most important."

Pogba and Sanchez's altercation was described as "strange" by Jamie Carragher, who compared it to something you would see at school.

CLASH OF TITANS

"I find this really strange," he said. "There should be penalty taker before the game and when people start talking who's on it, that's something that happens at school."

In response to Carragher and plenty of other football fans finding the incident bizarre, Gary Neville tried to clear up the confusion by explaining his own theory.

Neville reckons Sanchez reacted the way he did because he was actually the penalty taker during pre-season while Pogba wasn't there and expected to resume that role.

"I just wonder whether in pre-season, with Pogba not being there, Sanchez was on penalties," the former right-back responded.

"Maybe with Pogba coming back so late and not even being included in the team until a couple of days ago it hadn't quite been worked out.

"I think it would have been put on the board before who the penalty taker was. I think maybe one of them decided... Pogba was confident so he had to have it."

Carragher nodded in agreement so perhaps Neville is on to something. Either way, Pogba converted the penalty with aplomb and United went on to win 2-1 - and that's all that matters.
