A new breed of young, modern English football managers have finally come to the fore in what is an exciting time for the future of the game in England.Gareth Southgate perhaps best epitomised the new direction football management is taking after remarkably leading England to the semi-finals of the World Cup in the summer. However, Southgate is not the only one that is exciting English football lovers with both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard choosing to step out of the comfort of the television studio to try their hand at management.Gerrard was handed the mighty task of ending Celtic’s monopoly on silverware in Scotland after taking up the mantle at Rangers while Lampard was handed perhaps a less high profile mandate after Derby County secured his signature. As far as pre-season went, signs were good for both men.Gerrard’s Rangers looked a refreshed side under the Liverpool legend while Derby County looked a good bet to challenge at the top of the Championship once more. The picture looked all the more rosy for Lampard after his side stole a dramatic three points at the death in their opening game as he began his reign in the best possible way. However, that all came crashing down when The Rams welcomed Championship big boys Leeds United to Pride Park.United wasted little time in getting off the mark, scoring within five minutes before a Derby County equaliser seven minutes later. That was as good as it would get though for Derby as Marcelo Bielsa’s side dominated throughout, eventually easing to a 1-4 win.

Lineker tweets Lampard

Lampard would have been thoroughly disappointed with the result and chirps from some of his former colleagues will not have helped.

Gary Lineker, renowned for his incredible, and sometimes cruel wit, was quick to tweet Lampard offering him his job back as a pundit.

Brilliant. Brutal, but brilliant.

It can’t be denied that Lampard made a fine pundit, and BT Sport will no doubt miss him this season.

However, he might not be laughing at Lineker’s jokes if they continue to be aimed at him.

Here’s hoping that Lampard doesn’t give him too much material to work with as the season goes on.
