Real Madrid won their first trophy of the season as they defeated AC Milan 3-1 in the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy.

Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid the lead after two minutes, before Gonzalo Higuain scored on his return to the Bernabeu just two minutes later.

Gareth Bale continued his impressive pre-season by netting on the stroke of half-time to restore the lead for the home side.

And Borja Mayoral ensured Real Madrid would walk away with the silverware by scoring his side's third in stoppage time.

That result means Los Blancos won their 13th consecutive Bernabeu trophy.

And there was a lovely moment between Sergio Ramos and Paolo Maldini just before Real Madrid's captain lifted the trophy.

Maldini, a club legend at AC Milan, was given the task of presenting Ramos with the trophy.

And, just before he handed it over, Ramos showed great respect by taking his hat off to the Italian legend.

That's a fantastic gesture by Ramos. The mutual respect between the two is plain to see.

Real Madrid fans loved the moment shared between the two.

Ramos has consistently stated that Maldini is his idol. In 2015, he named the Italian defender as one player he would have loved to play alongside in his football career.

And Maldini returned the compliment in 2017, claiming that Ramos was the best defender in world football.

"Sergio Ramos is very good, but sometimes he forgets about defending," Maldini told the Grant Wahl Planet Futbol podcast, per FoxSportsAsia. "He's a great player though, he has skill and he can score."

Meanwhile, Julen Lopetegui announced he is still unsure about his starting line-up for their Super Cup clash against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

“I do not know if this will be the same eleven that I will line up against Atletico Madrid," he revealed, per CalcioMercato.

"Bale? I will not talk about the previous seasons, I found a happy and involved player, he will change his position on the pitch, he's training very well. Benzema? He's happy with himself and how he trained, he's in excellent condition.

"Milan played very well, they had several chances. The fans will be happy with our young people.

"Keylor and Courtois? We have made the decision to have them both, for us it is not a problem but two wonderful solutions.”
