West Ham clearly have a lot of work to do following Sunday's 4-0 defeat to Liverpool, despite spending almost £100m in the transfer window.

Summer signings Lucasz Fabianski, Jack Wilshere and Felipe Anderson all started at Anfield but were powerless as the Hammers plummeted to bottom of the Premier League.

Andriy Yarmolenko, the £18m signing from Borussia Dortmind, also made his debut for West Ham and was unable to have much influence.

Arguably the most disappointing performance came from Wilshere, who joined on a free transfer from Arsenal in July to much fanfare.

Wilshere was once regarded as the future of English football but his career has stagnated somewhat in recent years.

Injuries and poor form have prevented the 26-year-old from realising his huge potential, though it was hoped joining a new club would help him do that.

However, according to Jamie Carragher, Wilshere wasn't even that good a signing for West Ham and he has a lot to prove.

WILSHERE STRUGGLES ON DEBUT

"I don't think it’s as good as signing as people are saying," said the Liverpool legend. "He's still got to bring a lot more.

"If I was a West Ham fan I'd be more excited about the wide players than Jack Wilshere."

Brutal, but perhaps true considering Wilshere was a passenger for West Ham during the Liverpool defeat.

Wilshere started alongside Mark Noble and youngster Declan Rice in the creative midfield role that he claims is his best position.

But the Englishman failed to make any real impact against an energetic and far superior Liverpool midfield three of James Milner, Naby Keita and Georginio Wijnaldum.

And just to make things worse for Wilshere, a truly embarrassing statistic has emerged that just about sums up his performance.

According to bookmakers bet365, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson completed more passes (29) than eight outfield players at Anfield - and Wilshere was one of them.

No, seriously. Wilshere was West Ham's midfield creator on the day but completed less than 29 passes in 90 minutes on the pitch.

It's a good job the 26-year-old didn't cost a penny.
