Wayne Rooney has endured a slow start to life with DC United in the MLS.Prior to Sunday night's game vs Orlando City, his side had won twice in his first five appearances for the club, with Rooney getting on the scoresheet once. His impact had not been enough to take DC United off the bottom of the Western Conference. But he rolled back the years with a sensational performance in his side's 3-2 victory over their conference rivals.DC United scored a last minute goal through Luciano Acosta, who bagged his hat-trick in the process, but a lot of credit has to be given to Rooney.Ben Olsen's side pushed up all their players for a corner in the final minute, including their goalkeeper, in order to bag a late goal. However, when Orlando broke away, it seemed DC United's decision to go all out for a winner would backfire on them. But Rooney had other ideas. Having chased back and won the ball cleanly, he then moved forward before sending a perfect long ball into the box.Acosta rose highest and powered his effort into the net for a dramatic three points.

Rooney's heroics have gone viral on Twitter. Many footballers and pundits have reacted to his part in DC United's winner.

One such man is Ferdinand, who like many others, praised Rooney.

But he could not resist poking fun of Rooney's reaction to Acosta's winner.

Understandably shattered, Rooney could not join in with the celebrations as he made his way back slowly to the half-way line for the restart.

And Ferdinand picked up on that, writing: "Yessss @WayneRooney unreal scenes!!!! Ps not fancy running to join in the celebrations?! 🏃🏻‍♂️💨"

Gold. Rooney would have undoubtedly loved to have joined in with the celebrations, but it seems he was just too tired.

Rooney admitted after the game that he saw Orlando breaking from the corner before it even happened.

"To be honest, I saw it happen before we took the corner," he said, per the BBC.

"I normally go in the box for corners, that's why I stayed out because I tried to anticipate something like that happening.

"I've seen it before in football. You just rust run as quick as you can trying to get back. I was hoping he'd take a touch and he did."
