Liverpool look like the only team that can stop Manchester City in the Premier League this season.

Jurgen Klopp has heavily invested in new signings this summer to build a squad capable of going toe-to-toe with the reigning champions.

It's not just Liverpool's starting XI that makes them such a threat but the strength in depth Klopp has at his disposal.

Daniel Sturridge, Xherdan Shaqiri and Adam Lallana are all decent back-up options for the usual front three of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

And in midfield, Liverpool have no less than 10 players to choose from, which includes Shaqiri, Lallana and the injured Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Even defensively the Reds are stacked. Nathaniel Clyne and Alberto Moreno can replace Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson respectively while Virgil van Dijk has four potential partners.

Joe Gomez played alongside the Dutchman during Sunday's 4-0 win over West Ham, but Dejan Lovren will probably resume that role when he returns and Joel Matip remains an option.

OPTIONS GALORE

All this makes Klopp's reported plan for Alexander-Arnold very interesting.

According to the Independent, it's believed inside Liverpool that the 19-year-old will evolve into a central midfielder this season, despite how many options they already have.

Alexander-Arnold has shown over the past year that he's strong, comfortable on the ball and very creative, so he certainly has the attributes to be a midfielder.

It's claimed that the youngster will have evolved into a central player by the time Oxlade-Chamberlain returns from injury - so not long at all.

"When every player expected to be available for Liverpool this season is fit and free of suspension, Jurgen Klopp has three midfields to choose from," wrote Hughes.

"There is the one that started on Sunday that included Naby Keita, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum. There is another that featured on the bench: Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Fabinho.

"Klopp believes Xherdan Shaqiri can play as a No.8, so there is him, Curtis Jones and Marko Grujic to consider, though Grujic might leave on loan to a foreign club in the next few weeks.

"Inside the club, it is also believed that Trent Alexander-Arnold will evolve from full-back and into midfield. By the time he plays there, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is expected to have returned from injury."

Clearly Klopp thinks Alexander-Arnold's talents are wasted at right-back - which is nothing but exciting for Liverpool.

Whether it actually happens remains to be seen but there's no denying that Alexander-Arnold has huge untapped potential.
