Unai Emery's first game in charge of Arsenal in the Premier League did not go to plan.

It was always going to be a tough task against Manchester City, and in the end it was Pep Guardiola's side that triumphed 2-0.

In truth, it was not a very good performance from Arsenal at all.

They looked second best throughout, with their insistence of playing out from the back often being their downfall.

But it wasn't all doom and gloom for Arsenal. Emery handed a debut to 19-year-old midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

Not much was known about the French midfielder prior to joining the club.

He had only made 30 appearances for Lorient before his £7 million move this summer, with the majority of those games coming in the second tier of French football.

But despite his inexperience, Emery showed confidence in him by giving him a midfield berth against the reigning Premier League champions.

Although it could be argued he was at fault for the first Man City goal, he certainly displayed enough to suggest he has a very bright future.

Ian Wright has commented on the youngster's performance in his column for The Sun, claiming that he was the 'biggest positive' from the defeat.

After raving about Liverpool's Naby Keita, Wright wrote: "Later on Sunday afternoon another less obvious new boy impressed me in Arsenal’s young midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, signed from the relative wilderness of Ligue 2 Lorient in France.

"Yes, he found it tough going at times against City but what impressed me was his attitude and effervescence.

"It would have been easy to hide — let’s face it, others in the Arsenal side did — but he was still demanding the ball, still showing and still battling to the end.

"Gunners fans left the Emirates desperately looking for positives after an opening loss and Guendouzi was the biggest one of all."

Spot on, Ian. Not many Arsenal players covered themselves in glory with their performance, but Guendouzi gave a good account of himself.

He didn't have the best of days, but his application and effort was plain to see throughout.

It will be interesting to see how he progresses throughout the campaign, but he could well turn out to be an important player for Arsenal this season.

Emery also made a few comments about the youngster after the game.

"It’s his first match here in the Premier League," the former Paris Saint-Germain manager said, per the Metro. "He has personality and quality and if he is on the pitch he is improving very quickly."
