Liverpool really mean business this season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side made great strides last campaign, where they were defeated in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. They were also able to retain their position in the Premier League top four.
But Klopp has strengthened greatly this summer in the hope that they achieve greater success this term.
The German manager has addressed key positions in the past few months. Alisson has arrived to take the number one spot, while Klopp also added to his midfield by signing Naby Keita and Fabinho.
But question marks still remain over the defence.
Virgil van Dijk is one of the best defenders in the Premier League, but who should be partnered alongside him?
Dejan Lovren was Van Dijk’s partner for the second half of last season, but many Liverpool fans remain unconvinced with the Croatian.
Other options at Klopp’s disposal include Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan, while Joe Gomez partnered Van Dijk for Liverpool’s first Premier League game against West Ham.
Liverpool fans have voted for who they want to partner Van Dijk this season, and the results make for interesting reading.
Just over 8,000 fans voted on a poll made by @LFCFansCorner and, Gomez, despite his inexperience, narrowly came out on top with 47% of the vote.
Trailing just behind was Lovren, who tallied 46%, and way down was Matip, who had the backing of just 7% of the voters.
Ouch. That is interesting, though.
Klavan wasn't even an option, but it's fair to say he wouldn't have got too much backing anyway.
Gomez’s natural position is as a centre-back, but he has plied his trade as a right-back for much of his career at Anfield.
It seems Liverpool fans finally want to see him make the step up to the first team, with many preferring him over ‘one of the best defenders in the world.’
Another man who has confidence in Gomez’s abilities is Van Dijk himself.
The Dutch centre-back claimed following Liverpool’s 4-0 victory against West Ham that he is not worried by having to play with the youngster.
“I was not really worried to be fair,” he said, per the Liverpool Echo.
“I’ve played a couple of games pre-season with Joe at centre back and I have a very good relationship with him, a very good understanding outside of the pitch as well. That helps and hopefully we can build something.
“We need everyone in the squad. Everyone needs to be ready when we need you to stand there. It’s very important at our club.”
