Joe Cole says there is no player more deserving of a Premier League winner's medal than Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool skipper came agonisingly close to a league title two seasons ago as the Anfield club were narrowly pipped to the post by bitter rivals Manchester United.

But the Reds went backwards last campaign as they slipped to a seventh place finish in the Premier League; their lowest in 11 years.

However, the signing of Cole along with the appointment of Roy Hodgson has breathed new optimism into Liverpool and the ex-Chelsea star believes the club is moving in the right direction.

"All the lads here have got belief in what the manager wants us to do and the new signings have looked good," he told talkSPORT.

"It's a re-build for us but we're doing alright, and we just need to keep improving slowly and gradually."

No man wants success at Liverpool more than the wholehearted Gerrard, and Cole believes his friend of old deserves to lift the Premier League trophy on the hallowed Anfield turf.

"He's a tremendous player. I've known Steven since I was 17 or 18 and I obviously trained and played with him for England for 10 years so I know what he's all about, but when you see him in a Liverpool shirt he's even better," eulogised Cole.

"He's a fantastic player and if he plays well the team plays well and it's up to me now to assist him and try and help the club move on.

"A player like him deserves to win the Championship, I know that's what he wants over the next four to five years at the club."
