The Carabao Cup kicked off last night with teams from the Championship, League One and League Two taking part in the first round.One of the ties of the round saw Steve Bruce's Aston Villa travel to League Two side, Yeovil Town.Bruce rested a number of key first team players, including Jack Grealish, and it looked as if that could come back to haunt him.But after a goal-less first-half, Bruce sent a few of his key players on, and their quality started to tell.They broke the deadlock in the 77th minute through Conor Hourihane, and they managed to hold on for the remaining 13 minutes to secure their passage to the second round.Although Yeovil Town's players could be proud of the performance they put in, one of their players may not look back at the game too fondly.Diallang Jaiyseimi had the ball in the back of the net for the home side just before half-time.Thinking he had given his side the lead, Jaiyseimi ran right in front of the Aston Villa fans and mocked them by doing the 'take the L' dance; a celebration also widely used by Antoine Griezmann.But, Jaiyseimi suffered instant karma as the goal was disallowed for a foul.
It's fair to say he immediately regretted celebrating like that. There's an argument that the goal should have stood anyway, but all he's done is made himself look silly.
Even worse for Jaiysemi is that the game was shown live on Sky Sports. Thousands more watching the game on TV would have seen his celebration. Awkward.
Bruce admitted after the game he thought his team were fortunate to progress.
"If we're being brutally honest, we were fortunate," he said, per Avfc.co.uk. "In the first half we were too slow and didn't make enough happen.
"In the second half we were a bit better, a bit brighter. A lot of them found it difficult tonight against a spirited team.
"It was a cup final for Yeovil tonight. Live on the television, they've nearly pulled off a shock."
Aston Villa will be joined in the second round of the draw by thirteen Premier League clubs, including the likes of Southampton and Everton.
