Arturo Vidal’s best years are now arguably behind him but the Chilean midfielder will be keen to prove that’s not the case following his surprise move to Barcelona. The 31-year-old signed a three-year deal with the Catalan giants last week after deciding to leave Juventus earlier this summer."I've come here to bring a lot of energy on to the pitch. Joining Barça is a step up for me," Vidal told reporters after signing. "I will work hard to bring joy to the Barcelona fans."Vidal has already won a trophy with Barcelona. He came on in the 86th minute for Ousmane Dembele, whose spectacular winning goal earned his side a 2-1 win over Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday night. As he was only on the pitch for a matter of minutes, Barça fans didn’t get to see enough of their new summer signing to form an opinion. However, Ernesto Valverde named the tough-tackling central midfielder in his starting line-up for Wednesday evening’s Juan Gamper Trophy clash against Boca Juniors at the Camp Nou.Vidal was part of a strong starting XI, which also featured the likes of Gerard Pique, Philippe Coutinho and Lionel Messi.

Barcelona fans react to Vidal's first start

Needless to say, Messi was the game’s standout performer. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner set up Malcom for the opening goal and then scored with a clever chip five minutes before half-time.

But what did Barça supporters think about Vidal’s first start for the club?

Well, although it’s very early days, many of them were reasonably impressed with what saw from the South American.

Quite a few of them believe that Vidal is an upgrade on Paulinho, who returned to Guangzhou Evergrande on loan this summer after just one season at the Camp Nou.

He did look a little rusty at times

Paulinho played 49 times for Barça, scoring nine goals, but was criticised for his tendency to play safe when in possession. Unlike the Brazil international, Vidal is also happy to throw himself into challenges in order to win the ball.

Some fans, however, did feel that he looked a little rusty - but that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Vidal has played little football since the end of last season - Chile failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup - and so it will take him a little time to regain his sharpness.

It’s currently unclear whether Valverde will start Vidal in Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Deportivo Alaves this weekend.

But after tonight’s showing, he certainly stands a chance of getting the nod.
