If there is one superstar in the WWE that fans just love to hate, it's Roman Reigns.

Ever since he's become the guy in the WWE and Vince McMahon's hand-picked successor to John Cena, there has always been a strong presence of boos whenever he appears on screen for a promo, or in the ring for a match.

The Big Dog will be addressed in the same manner this Sunday at SummerSlam when he makes his way to the ring for his Universal Championship match against Brock Lesnar.

Reigns recently spoke to Yahoo! Sports to promote his match against Lesnar this Sunday at SummerSlam where he was asked about his relationship with the fans, especially those that boo him.

Closet Lovers

The former WWE Champion describes the fans that boo as 'closet lovers', stating that because of the way which they deliver the boos, it shows that they enjoy seeing him perform.

He said: "I think they're like closet lovers to be honest. You can say whatever you want, but it's how you say it that matters.

"The way they deliver it, they're more connected to me than their so called 'favorites.' For me to be able to pull on whatever string I pull on, it just goes to show there's a deep rooting there.

"[The crowd reaction] doesn't really matter to me, as long as they're really loud, that's all I really care about.

"There could be certain moments where they try to hijack shows and all of that, but by the end of the match, they're standing up so I've been blessed.

"I really do think that if they love to hate you, they still love you."

It would be interesting to see what fans think of this, as Reigns definitely isn't one of the worst performers in the WWE, so he doesn't warrant boos for that reason.

However, fans have been booing Reigns now ever since he was pushed to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 31.

Fans have issues with how its perceived that The Big Dog receives special treatment by WWE, his real-life demeanor, his in-ring limitations, his speaking skills and his character presentation.

One way which many people believe WWE could solve the problem of Reigns is by turning him heel, but this seems unlikely due to his connection with the younger generation of WWE fans as the face of the company.

Until then, it will remain a 'love-to-hate' relationship.
