Julen Lopetegui didn't exactly experience the perfect start to life at Real Madrid.

Los Blancos lost their stranglehold on the European trophies with defeat to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, relinquishing a 2-1 lead to lose 4-2 after extra-time.

And while the season has only just begun, it doesn't bode well for a club that have freshly lost Zinedine Zidane and star man Cristiano Ronaldo.

The defeat was a weighty one psychologically, too, with Lopetegui lamenting after the game: “In a final like this, mistakes can make a key difference and Atlético are experts in taking advantage.

"They got a deserved win. When we levelled the scores, we were better, they tied it up in an unfortunate play. We have to congratulate them and pick ourselves up, because LaLiga is starting and we need to rebuild quickly.

Real struggled v Atletico

"I feel frustrated and sad, but I know that responsibility forces us to move on tomorrow.

"It is not a matter of looking at specific errors, because we lost as a team. We had good and bad moments, and that is where the rival punished us."

The Spanish media was quick to sink their teeth into Real Madrid, too, with publications from Sport to Mundo Deportivo all dishing out the criticism.

Real Madrid fans rate the players

The press aren't the only ones sharpening their knives either with supporters less than impressed with the team's performance in Estonia.

And to aggregate exactly how the fans felt, Marca constructed an interactive vote that allowed people to either vote up or vote down certain players after their performance v Atletico.

To say there were brutal would be putting things mildly - check out the results below:

1. Gareth Bale: +6,900
2. Karim Benzema: +5,700
3. Toni Kroos: +2,600
4. Luka Modric: -2,000
5. Marco Asensio: -3,800
6. Casemiro: -4,700
7. Lucas Vazquez: -4,700
8. Dani Ceballos: -4,800
9. Borja Mayoral: -4,800
10. Marcelo: -4,800
11. Isco: -4,800
12. Sergio Ramos: -4,900
13. Keylor Navas: -4,900
14. Dani Carvajal: -4,900
15. Raphael Varane: -5,000

You know it's bad when Modric is coming fourth with a massive 2,000 more down-votes than up-votes.

There are some terrible reviews for absolute staples such as Ramos and Varane that shows Real supporters are less than pleased with their back four.

The only players who can hold their head high are Bale, Benzema and Kroos who somehow managed to gain more positive reviews than negative ones.

Ultimately, though, there were very few things Real can take from the game moving forward and Lopetegui will need to ring the changes sooner rather than later.

Any more performances like this week's in crunch La Liga or Champions League fixtures and Los Blancos could be found out this season.

The club is in a serious phrase of transition right now and it's been a case of so far, so worrying.
