It's been just over a year since Neymar completed a world-record transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for £200m.

In the same summer, PSG also agreed a £166m deal for Kylian Mbappe while Barca themselves signed Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund for £135.5m.

Barcelona then continued their huge spending in January by paying Liverpool an eye-watering £146m for Philippe Coutinho.

So safe to say transfer fees in football have spun out of control. It was only in 2016 that Manchester United made history by signing Paul Pogba for £89m, but since then the record has doubled.

With every passing year players are becoming more and more expensive - so much so that it probably won't be long before a £300m transfer is made.

Paying £100m for a world-class player is fast becoming the norm in football, yet there are some players who never cost a single penny throughout their careers.

Meet the five Premier League players who played at the top level having only ever completed free transfers or loan moves (excluding one-club men).

JON OTSEMOBOR

Only certain sections of football fans will recognise these first two names. Jon Otsemobor started at Liverpool in 2002 and played for Hull City, Bolton Wanderers and Crewe Alexandra on loan.

He then joined Rotherham United in 2005 before returning to Crewe and later moving to Norwich City, Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons between 2006 and 2014 - all for free.

RICHIE PARTRIDGE

Another one for Liverpool fans, Richie Partridge's senior career also began on Merseyside and he spent two years on loan at Bristol Rovers and Coventry City.

Between 2005 and 2013 the former midfielder joined no less than eight other clubs for absolutely nothing, retiring aged 32 at Airbus UK Broughton.

STUART TAYLOR

Now 37 years old, Stuart Taylor is currently a free agent after being released by Southampton. He started his career at Arsenal in 1997 and spent four of his eight years there out on loan.

Taylor joined Aston Villa in 2005 and has since made free transfers to Manchester City, Reading, Leeds United and most recently Southampton in 2016.

SOL CAMPBELL

Sol Campbell is undoubtedly the biggest name on this list, not only because of his success at Arsenal but the manner of his move there from Tottenham in 2001.

He left Spurs for free and ended up winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups in five years at Highbury, later featuring for Portsmouth, Notts County and Newcastle United.

MATHIEU FLAMINI

Marseille, Arsenal, AC Milan, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Getafe, free agent - that's how Mathieu Flamini's career has panned out since 2003 and he didn't cost a penny.

Whether the 34-year-old joins another club remains to be seen but he's an environmental entrepreneur and tipped to become a billionaire, so he's pretty much set for life.
