Formula E are making a strong push to sign Spanish enigma Fernando Alonso in the wake of the two-time champion’s decision to call time on his F1 career.

Alonso announced earlier this week that he will not race for McLaren next season, but is yet to confirm his plans for 2019.

The Spaniard has made it evidently clear that he is keen to pursue the final jewel of the Triple Crown by claiming the Indianapolis 500 title.

Having won the Monaco Grand Prix in 2006 and 2007, and the Le Mans 24-hour race in June, the 37-year-old only requires victory at the Indy 500 to complete the trilogy.

Sportsmail understand that informal discussions have already begun for him to drive in Formula E in 2020. The electric series’ chief executive Alejandro Agag is doing everything in his power to persuade his compatriot to sign.

The duo became close during Alonso’s four seasons at Renault, when Agag and the team’s principal Flavio Briatore purchased the TV rights for F1 in Spain.

Agag spoke to Autosport back in June regarding the future of his good friend Alonso, and said: “I would love to have him (Alonso). He wants to win everything. He wants to win the Indy500 then he will be missing Formula E so he will have to come here.

“Alberto Longo (Formula E deputy CEO) knows Fernando very well, me too, for many years. We used to sit in the Renault motor home with his father and his manager to watch races.

“He is obviously an incredibly talented driver and it would be a privilege for us to have him,” Agag concluded.

The 2020 campaign will be Formula E’s sixth season since its conception back in 2014 and will coincide with the entry of manufacturers Mercedes, Porsche and BMW to the series.

McLaren have paid Alonso £25 million-per-year since he re-joined the Surrey-based outfit back in 2015 and it’s evident that only these heavyweights in the motorsport industry could meet his demands.

However, the sport’s hierarchy are prepared to make up any shortfall to get a deal over the line if the Spaniard is willing to take an ambassadorial role.

Alonso could be the established name that the electric series has bee waiting for.

His former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa is set to make his Formula E debut next season, with the Brazilian one of several ex-F1 drivers to have now made the switch.

They include Sebastian Buemi, who was part of Alonso’s victorious Le Mans team this year, and Brazilian Lucas di Grassi.
