WWE's biggest party of the summer, SummerSlam, will take place this Sunday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York and it looks set to be a spectacular event.

Some of the matches included on the stacked card are Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns, Alexa Bliss vs Ronda Rousey, AJ Styles vs Samoa Joe, and Daniel Bryan vs The Miz.

However, this year's edition of SummerSlam will have to pull out all the stops in order to rank amongst the best SummerSlam's in the event's history.

Especially if it wants to beat SummerSlam 2002, arguably the best SummerSlam event of all-time.

From the top of the show, to the main event, SummerSlam 2002 had it all.

The perfect opener

SummerSlam 2002 opened with a high octane clash between Kurt Angle and Rey Mysterio.

Both competitors were dealing with time constrictions, but this didn't matter since they're both very highly talented performers.

Angle's strength combined with Mysterio's speed produced a perfect opener for what would be one of the best WWE pay-per-views of all-time, and it helped to set the tone for the rest of the show.

Champions Showcase

We might not ever get another SummerSlam where so much talent was performing throughout the card. The show was stacked with superstars that could perform at the highest level possible.

15 out of the 18 superstars included on the show were either former world champions at the time of the event, or would turn out to be future world champions.

Kurt Angle, Ric Flair, Chris Jericho, Booker T, Chris Benoit, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and The Rock had all enjoyed at least one World Championship reign prior to August 25, 2002.

On the flip side, Rey Mysterio, Edge, Eddie Guerrero, Christian, Rob Van Dam and Brock Lesnar would all win championship gold in the future. Of course, The Beast didn't have to wait too long in order to do so.

Shawn Michaels Return

Raw's main event for SummerSlam 2002 was an Unsanctioned Street Fight between the returning Shawn Michaels and Triple H.

HBK had previously been away from the ring for four years after he initially retired from pro wrestling in 1998 due to a back injury. In that time, Triple H had transformed from his best friend, into the company's biggest heel.

Despite being absent for four years, Michaels showed no ring rust, as he delivered a battle for the ages alongside The Game, providing an emotional five-star classic as well as a revenge story against his former best friend that fans were heavily invested in.

Not only will this clash go down as one of the best SummerSlam matches of all time, it would also be the catalyst for the second phase of Michaels' Hall of Fame career.

Brock Lesnar creates history

SmackDown's main event saw The Rock, face off against the company's future and one of the brightest young stars in the business in Brock Lesnar in a match for the WWE Undisputed Championship.

Lesnar won the championship after pinning The Rock following an F-5, becoming, at the time, the youngest WWE Champion history, and the crowd was behind him throughout the entire match.

This match had so many near-falls to keep the fans on the edge of their seats, and even Paul Heyman was sent through the announce table with a Rock Bottom by The Rock. Lesnar won the match cleanly too despite being a monster heel.

At the end of the day, this match was about The Rock passing on the torch to someone he thought was the future of the company in Lesnar, and it achieved exactly that, if only for a year and a half.
