Julen Lopetegui took over Real Madrid in the most unusual circumstances - and few would envy him because of it.

Yes, he's coaching the most successful side in European football but he's taking over from a man who won three Champions League titles in a row.

On top of that, Real have just sold their best and arguably greatest ever player as Cristiano Ronaldo joined Juventus for €100 million.

It's quite a lot of pressure on the man to keep the success going after that but here's some more: he joins Real on the back of being sacked as Spain coach literally on the eve of the World Cup.

And so to say that eyes on are Lopetegui is an understatement - and they didn't like what they saw against Atletico in the European Super Cup as their cross-city rivals ran out 4-2 winners.

Goals from Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos simply weren't enough in answer to a brace from Diego Costa and extra-time goals by Saul Niguez and Koke, leading to Real's first defeat in an international final since 2000.

Replacing Zidane, losing Ronaldo, the eyes of the world on him, and already the unwanted breaking of a record - not the start the new boss will have wanted.

What really makes it strange, though, is that Lopetegui has always been adamant that he is happy with the squad despite not bringing in many new players of his own and losing the star.

But according to reports, he may not be telling the truth.

Despite saying things like “If nobody comes in and nobody else goes, I will be happy,” during pre-season and "I do not think the club's policy changes much because of this game,” after the defeat to Atletico, AS suggests that the Real coach really does want new signings.

Specifically, that means a centre-forward, a central defender and a 'physical midfielder'. The only signing for the first eleven this summer has been Thibaut Courtois, although AS believes that it was the club who wanted the Belgian, not Lopetegui.

It's also said that with the lack of depth now at the club, there is 'no doubt' that Zidane resigned over the issues that Lopetegui is now facing.

The club are clearly looking at signing for the future by bringing in Brazilian teenagers Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, as well as 20-year-old Álvaro Odriozola from Real Sociedad.

But, supposedly, that isn't what the new boss wants - and for someone under so much pressure from the start, this doesn't bode well for Real Madrid's season.
