Jose Mourinho's decision to give Paul Pogba the captain's armband for Manchester United's Premier League opener against Leicester City proved to be a good one.

Pogba was influential as United got their 2018/19 league campaign off to a winning start.

Mourinho explained after the game that he gave the armband to him because of the example he sets in the dressing room.

"Last season he was captain a few times," he told Sky Sports, per the Mirror. "The captain is [Antonio] Valencia. He is not here. Pogba is one of the options [when Valencia is not here].

"It's his third season, he's come through the academy and knows the club well. He is a good example in the dressing room."

Paul Scholes has now reacted to Mourinho's decision, and he has a very interesting opinion.

Scholes believes that Mourinho should have given Pogba the captaincy immediately after he signed for the club in 2016.

"Captain’s armband? I thought that the minute we signed him he should have been made captain," he said on BBC 5 Live Sport, per the Metro. "Give him some responsibility as a young player.

"I don’t think there was a standout person to be captain in that team and I just thought it was ideal for him. Hopefully he can keep that now.

"He started okay on Friday but I don’t think he was anything special."

Although Antonio Valencia is expected to retain his captaincy duties after his comeback from injury, Scholes believes that Pogba should hold on to the position if it enhances his performances.

"But if he can thrive with that extra responsibility then he should keep the armband," he added.

Interesting. Scholes has been critical of Pogba in the past, but he clearly thinks he has the attitude and the ability needed to be a successful captain.

Pogba explained it was a 'dream come true' to be given the opportunity to captain the side.

"I always love the club," he said after the game, per the Daily Mail.  "I came in the academy, I grew up. I played for the first team. For me, it was a dream come true and wearing the armband, it's even more of an honour because of the past, the players who've worn it.

"They help me, my team-mates, it makes me want to give them love and give them good performances on the pitch."
