In what has been a fine series for England so far, the topic of Ben Stokes has always been looming in the background.

2-0 ahead prior to the match at Trent Bridge, much of the talk has been on how Stokes will fit in, following the conclusion of his trial, and his re-introduction to the England squad.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan felt that Stokes had ‘been made to suffer enough’ as a result of the trial.

Another ex-captain, Nasser Hussain, also felt that Stokes deserved a re-call, as long as he was mentally in the right state of mind.

Most assumed that Stokes would make his way back into the side for the clash in Nottingham, and it has now been confirmed that he will take the place of Sam Curran.

The series is obviously going to plan, yet the decision has been made that the skill and experience of Stokes can help England to secure a series win at the earliest possible opportunity.

Whilst it may have been expected, a large number of England fans on Twitter have reacted badly to the decision to drop Curran.

You can see some examples below:

The first Test against India was astonishingly Curran’s second ever – the 20-year-old proving his worth with a man of the match performance.

The star became the youngest Englishman to claim a four-wicket haul, as well as saving the side with 63 runs at a crucial time.

Fairly unsurprising then that fans feel he has done little to deserve some time out of the team.

It remains to be seen whether the decision will come back to haunt Joe Root, and the skipper will surely be looking forward to putting the Stokes saga to bed.

The Test begins in Nottingham on Saturday.
