Napoli's president had a very controversial reaction to Alisson Becker's Liverpool move

Alisson Becker was a serious coup for Liverpool this summer.

Although Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius are very capable goalkeepers on their day, the Reds have been lacking a truly top-class shot stopper since the departure of Pepe Reina.

That's no longer the case with the arrival of Alisson who signed late in the summer from AS Roma.

Jurgen Klopp noted at the time: “At one point in the last few weeks it came up, the opportunity to sign one of the world’s best goalkeepers - then it’s not a long thought, to be honest, it’s only that you need to have a little talk with the owners!

“It shows the value of goalkeepers, of course, in this moment. It will happen a lot in the next few weeks I guess and that’s it, so we are really happy to have him here now."

Liverpool sign Alisson Becker

Of course, signing Alisson was easier said than done with Liverpool requiring a then world-record fee for a goalkeeper to make the deal happen.

It was their second major purchase from Roma, too, having made the inspired decision to sign Mohamed Salah last summer.

The Italian club have defended their decision to sell up on both occasions but that hasn't stopped the move from causing controversy in Serie A.

Napoli president's reaction

Napoli's ever-controversial president Aurelio De Laurentiis has now reacted to the deal and it was typically controversial.

"Roma were dismantled and reassembled, I can't evaluate them: I wouldn't have sold Alisson, not even for €100m (£90m/$114m)," he informed Corriere dello Sport.

"I had offered €60m (£54m/$68m) for him and they didn't want to give him to us... But then I understood that he would go to Liverpool.

"I've always suspected that the real owner of Liverpool is also that of Rome. A little bird whispered it in my ear a few years ago. And if that is true, with a shared ownership they could not both compete in the Champions League."

Wow, they're not the kind of comments you just throw about.

Footballing world reacts

Unsurprisingly, the quotes caused quite the reaction on Twitter - check out some of the finest:

You know it's major when a rival owner has even decided to react.

Alisson will continue his career with Liverpool this weekend as the Reds look to build on their win over West Ham with an impressive performance against Crystal Palace.

Liverpool FC v West Ham United - Premier League

His arrival could prove crucial if Liverpool are to challenge for the Premier League or string together another Champions League run.

De Laurentiis probably reckons the club shouldn't be in either but when one of Napoli's rivals has shed two of their best players, he should probably be happy.
