The race for the Rookie of the Year award was one of the major talking points last season as Ben Simmons and Donovan Mitchell battled it out. With another talented draft class entering the league for the upcoming campaign, it's likely to be another topic of discussion. The race for the honour is expected to be wide open as the likes of Deandre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III, Luka Doncic, Jaren Jackson Jr., Trae Young and Collin Sexton can all have huge impacts in their debut seasons. The most experienced player among this year's rookies is easily Doncic as he enjoyed huge success in Europe. The Slovenian is fresh off winning the Euroleague MVP with Real Madrid in a campaign where he helped the team win multiple trophies. His talent is unquestionable as he proved it against experienced pros overseas but it'll be interesting to see how his game translates into the NBA.

Respect for his peers

Doncic is many people's tip to win Rookie of the Year as he's landed in a good spot with the Dallas Mavericks.

But when asked for his choice, he went with the number one overall pick.

"I would say [Phoenix center Deandre] Ayton. He was the number one pick. He’s tall, he’s strong, he can do so many things," Doncic said, per ESPN's Chris Forsberg.

Forsberg explained that almost every rookie replied to that question by asking if they can choose themselves.

Doncic, however, didn't hesitate in choosing Ayton as his tip to claim the prize, which shows the respect he has for his game.

The center, who was selected by the Phoenix Suns, is likely to be the favourite as he's easily capable of averaging a double-double.

He showed this in the Summer League as he was a dominant force in the low post and on the glass.

The 20-year-old will probably have the best stats of all the first year players and that usually impresses the voters.

His size, athleticism and physicality will allow him to adapt to the league quickly and go up against other skilled centers.

Doncic certainly shouldn't be ruled out but his lack of athleticism may see him take more time to get used to the physical demands.

There's no doubt that this will be one of the most talented drafts of recent years with so much potential.

We could be seeing some future superstars emerging next season.
