Kevin De Bruyne’s knee injury is a major disappointment.

Not just for Manchester City, but for football fans who enjoy watching one of the finest midfielders in the world.

The Belgium international suffered an injury in training on Wednesday and will be out for three months.

City confirmed De Bruyne has a lateral collateral ligament lesion in his right knee, but he doesn’t require surgery.

The Premier League champions have strength in depth in midfield but De Bruyne’s injury remains a blow.

Indeed, it might make the title race a little more interesting.

Liverpool are viewed as the greatest threat to Man City this season and De Bruyne will have to watch on when the clubs will meet at Anfield on October 10.

Klopp reacts

Does Jurgen Klopp believe that the Belgian’s injury has levelled the playing field? Absolutely not.

“I think somebody who thinks like that about a situation like that is an a**hole to be honest, I’m not like that,” Klopp replied when asked the question.

“First of all I wish him the absolutely very best. I love this player and I wanted him desperately when I was at Dortmund and he was at Chelsea but Jose didn’t give him to me.

“What a season he played. What a World Cup he played. I really feel for him.

“They have options, of course. They always have options.

“They brought in Riyad Mahrez, a different player, but they can all play in different positions.

“Nobody needs to worry about Man City and their quality. There’s still a lot there.”

He’s right. Guardiola has enough in midfield to get by without De Bruyne.

But it will be interesting to see whether the 27-year-old’s absence is felt when the Citizens come up against their rivals.

De Bruyne is expected to miss the games against Liverpool and Tottenham in October.
