But for an unlikely move abroad before the transfer window closes on August 31, Loris Karius will spend the 2018/19 season as Liverpool's second-choice goalkeeper.

His calamitous performance in the Champions League final against Real Madrid forced Jurgen Klopp to search for a new No.1, which led to Alisson's £66m move in July.

Alisson is the world-class goalkeeper Liverpool have craved for years, so it was inevitable the Brazil international would immediately be made first choice.

However, Klopp recently insisted that Karius has an important role to play because he's an "outstanding goalkeeper" and Liverpool need strength in depth.

"Obviously Alisson is a world-class goalkeeper, so we're not going to say 'let's have a look'," said the German in July. "He will play, of course.

"He is the number one for Brazil and then there is the fee. When Alisson is ready, he will be in our goal. We all need to help him so he can perform as good as possible.

"But for that to happen we need a strong squad around him and Loris is an outstanding goalkeeper. That's the truth. Nothing else."

KARIUS OUT OF FAVOUR

Karius' poor form continued into pre-season as he made mistakes in friendlies against Tranmere Rovers, Chester City and Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool fans quickly lost faith in the 25-year-old as a result and were pleased to see Alisson arrive as his replacement.

But now they feel bad for Karius after what happened before last Sunday's 4-0 win against West Ham.

Inside Anfield footage was released earlier this week and it was noticed that Karius and Alisson received completely different receptions from supporters in the stadium.

Whereas Alisson got a huge cheer and applause when he stepped onto the pitch, Karius, who walked out first, got nothing of the sort.

Liverpool fans also looked a lot more interested in high-fiving Alisson than Karius as they emerged from the tunnel. Check it out below at 1:54.

"Anyone else feel bad for Karius when Alisson gets loads of applause?" wrote one Liverpool fan, while another commented: "He (Karius) must have no mental confidence."

Alisson is a new signing for Liverpool so he was always going to be the centre of attention, but it's a wonder how Karius feels about being replaced.

His confidence remains at an all-time low and as long as he remains at Liverpool that's probably not going to change.
