Throughout his time in Los Angeles, Jeanie Buss has been a strong supporter of Kobe Bryant. After all, he led LA to five championships during his 20-year career.

Even after the team signed LeBron James to a four-year, $154 million deal this summer, Buss was adamant that he, nor anyone, will ever surpass Kobe’s legacy in her eyes, even with arguably the best player to ever live now becoming a Laker.

“You talked about Kobe’s legacy; no one will ever touch Kobe’s legacy for what he did with the Lakers,” said Buss during an appearance on Fox Sports Radio, via Anthony Irwin of Silver Screen and Roll. “The fact that he stayed with the team for 20 years and won us five championships. To even question Kobe’s legacy or what he means to Lakers fans; it’s ridiculous.”

Since Buss became controlling owner of the team (for life) back in 2017, she made it clear that she wants to return the Lakers to their glory days. She didn't waste any time, either.

Signing Magic Johnson to become president of basketball operations and then Rob Pelinka to become general manager, Buss transformed the team’s front office early in her new role and the moves seem to have paid off.

LeBron’s now in town. The young nucleus consisting of Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart and Moritz Wagner is promising and gritty veterans Rajon Rondo, Michael Beasley, Lance Stephenson and JaVale McGee also signed, seemingly agreeing with the new direction of the club.

Although Johnson and Pelinka have done a fantastic job since taking over, Buss has her sights set on Bryant and has been relentlessly trying to get him to be a part of the team in an official capacity. But, so far, she hasn't been successful.

First Magic now Kobe

“I’m constantly trying to get Kobe to get more involved. He’s got so many other projects that he’s doing. He’s so creative and he’s got so many different things. He knows how much I need him and how much his support means to me. He always has an open door to anything he wants to do with the Lakers,” she said on an interview on “The Rich Eisen Show”.

There’s no indication that Kobe is interested, but if he is, he seemingly can be a part of the team’s bright future. If he ends up getting involved, there's no telling how big of an impact he might make in whatever role he's asked to undertake. But, given his career as a whole, there's no reason to doubt that he'd excel at whatever he does next.
