When the Atlanta Hawks traded the third pick in the 2018 NBA Draft (highly-touted international phenom Luka Doncic) to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for fifth pick Trae Young, they made a bold move to acquire their point guard of the future. However, their original plan for him was unknown. After all, incumbent starter Dennis Schroder was on the roster. Then, a few weeks later, they landed Jeremy Lin in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets, crowding the point guard position even further. However, Atlanta’s plans became clearer when they agreed to a three-team trade that sent Schroder to the Oklahoma City Thunder. That opened the door for Young (and Lin) to play huge minutes.Despite the clear path, Young recently indicated that he doesn’t know whether or not he will start when the season tips off.“We’ll just wait and see what happens,” Young told Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I don’t get caught up in all of that. I know I’m going to get a chance to play and do what I do on the court. I just need to control what I can control.”Despite that, he knows that Atlanta is committed to him as their point guard since they dealt Schroder.

ATL's message to him

“Obviously when they move the point guard they’ve had for a while, their starting point guard, it definitely opened my eyes,” Young said. “It shows how much they are committed to me. Bringing Jeremy in as well is a good fit for us. I know there is a lot on my plate. I’m looking forward to it.”

The recent comments of general manager Travis Schlenk indicate that the Hawks will give Young a gigantic role in his rookie year.

"He blew up and got national recognition because of the shooting, but to us, his best asset today is his passing," Schlenk said in late-July, per Brad Botkin of CBS Sports. "You just don't see kids his age who can run pick and roll so naturally, who can make plays and find guys on the move with both their left and right hand. He's got a great feel for the court, and summer league can only show so much of that. When he has NBA players all around him, its going to open up the court so much more for him."

Therefore, it seems as though he will be able to show off not only his scoring ability, but his vision as well in a high-usage role.

It will be fascinating to see the impact that Young will make in what should be a rebuilding season in Atlanta.
