A new era got underway on Saturday as Cristiano Ronaldo made his debut for Juventus.

The Portuguese superstar, who ended a nine-year stay at Real Madrid to join the Bianconeri, played the entire match as the reigning Serie A champions started the season with a 3-2 win against Chievo.

Ronaldo played as a lone striker and while fans questioned whether that is the best position for him, his manager was pleased.

“Ronaldo held out well physically, has only been training with us for seven days and did really well. It’s a pity he wasn’t able to score a goal,” Massimiliano Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

While Ronaldo looked rusty, the same can’t be said for Lionel Messi.

The Argentinian produced an incredible performance in Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Alaves on Saturday evening.

Messi scored two goals and he was at the heart of everything. It was a joy to watch - and it was only the first game of the season.

Messi fan's eye-opening tweet

Barcelona fans enjoyed watching their star man shine while Ronaldo struggled.

And one supporter produced a really eye-opening tweet after their respective performances.

The fan, who goes by @LioneI10i on Twitter, compared Messi’s match rating without Andres Iniesta and Xavi to Ronaldo’s without Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Marcelo.

The same website, FotMob, rated gave Messi a 9.7 rating - while Ronaldo got just 5.8.

Pretty eye-opening.

Of course, there's no reason to be concerned about Ronaldo. Once the 33-year-old settles at Juventus, he will take the league by storm.

But it’s interesting that Messi has seemingly debunked the idea that he needed Xavi and Iniesta to thrive.

Messi's critics wondered whether his success came as a result of playing with two brilliant playmakers.

Apparently not.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner produced a display that many other players would consider to be their best performance of the season.

And Messi did it in Barcelona’s first league match of the 2018-19 campaign.

There really are no words to describe him.
