After winning back-to-back championships, the Golden State Warriors were somehow able to add DeMarcus Cousins to their team this summer. The news came as a shock to the rest of the NBA world as the league's most formidable outfit was securing the services of a dominant center on a one-year, $5.3 million deal. The caveat is that the 28-year-old is, of course, recovering from a torn Achilles but he is expected to make a return after the new year.Warriors general manager Bob Myers has already admitted that the aim is simply to have the All-Star ready for the playoffs.Rolling out a lineup with five All-NBA players will make it extremely difficult for any team to stop the Dubs from landing a third straight title.
The final piece of the jigsaw
Cousins will provide the Warriors with the one thing they've lacked in the Steve Kerr era; an elite big man.
In a recent appearance on The Bill Simmons podcast, Stephen Curry explained how Boogie will add a different dimension to their offence.
"I think all the way through, just the benefit of being on our team, obviously for him, is there’s no rush for him to come back," Curry said about Cousins.
"He can really take his time and get right. But, when I look at just the opportunity that comes past January, February, whenever he comes back, to the playoffs, it gives us a whole new dynamic.
"And whatever type of DeMarcus shows up—I know he expects to be back to fully 100 percent and we do too—[he] gives us a new dimension that we haven’t had before, a guy that can actually go get a bucket on the block.
"We can have guys, shooters around him."
Accommodating the former Sacramento Kings star will take time and will require a lot of adjustments.
But Curry says they're excited for what's in store for next season.
"There’s going to be a feeling-out process, obviously," he said. "Because lineups will change a little bit. Rotations may change a little bit.
"But, I think just over the course of 82 games, and then we look at the playoffs, it gives us something to look forward to and something to really focus on—how we’re going to implement his skill set to what we do.”
If Cousins is able to recover fully and perform at his best level, another championship will surely be heading to the Bay Area.
