It's back to the drawing board for Manchester United after a woeful 3-2 defeat to Brighton.

The Red Devils were uninspired, approaching the game as if they expected all three points, and came away embarrassed.

Having watched Manchester City thump Huddersfield 6-1 in the earlier kick-off, this was not how Jose Mourinho wanted his afternoon to go.

Two goals in the space of three first-half minutes saw Jose Mourinho’s side fall 2-0 behind.

Glenn Murray claimed the first with a deft finish after he evaded Victor Lindelof’s marking.

And Shane Duffy doubled Brighton’s lead after Man United failed to clear their lines.

The Red Devils got back into the match quickly. In the 34th minute, Luke Shaw’s deflected shot arrived perfectly for Romelu Lukaku to head home.

Man United fans slam poor trio

But Brighton restored their two-goal lead before half-time from the penalty spot.

Eric Bailly was the culprit, bringing down Pascal Gross in the area, but there were a string of errors in the build up to the foul.

Gross got to his feet and David de Gea couldn’t keep his penalty out.

It was a desperately poor performance from Man United, despite Paul Pogba's late penalty, and their fans took to Twitter to heap the blame on three players.

It’s clear why Mourinho was desperate for a new centre-back in the transfer window. Lindelof and Bailly were terrible.

Lindelof was guilty of failing to track Murray for Brighton’s first goal and Bailly brought down Gross for the penalty.

The third player Man United supporters were deeply disappointed in was Juan Mata.

The Spanish playmaker was anonymous on the right wing. He seemed to create more problems for his side by frequently coming inside and providing no width.

It wasn’t a surprise when Mata didn’t return for the second half. He was replaced by Marcus Rashford.

Mourinho’s faith in Mata, especially as a right-winger, has come into question.

But he won't be the only player the Portuguese coach is upset with. Not a single Man United player covered himself in glory.
