The new Premier League season is just two weeks old and already there is a sense of crisis developing at Manchester United.Brighton defeated the Red Devils 3-1 on Sunday afternoon despite having just three shots on target, a result which left Jose Mourinho looking exasperated as his side slipped down to 10th in the table. There was quickly talk of the Portuguese's 'third season syndrome' as it soon became apparent that his side were in for a torrid time against Chris Hughton's well-organised outfit.Glenn Murray and Shane Duffy handed the Seagulls a surprise two-goal lead before Romelu Lukaku hit back in the 34th minute.A Pascal Gross penalty before half-time put the hosts back in control, meaning that Paul Pogba's late spot-kick was no more than a consolation.Questions will be asked about United's centre-half pairings as Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly both made errors, yet the problems plaguing last season's runners-up were widespread.Lukaku may have got himself on the scoresheet but things just weren't clicking in the final third.

Lukaku's embarrassing moment

The Belgian endured a frustrating afternoon and one moment just summarised his struggles in unlocking a resolute Brighton defence as he tried - and failed - to pull off a back-heel near the touchline:

It's little wonder his first touch gets criticised.

United frequently lacked composure; Bailly lunged in unnecessarily for the penalty, just as they looked like getting back into the game and his rash clearance had already played a part in the second goal. Later, Pogba hit a pass into nowhere.

United's 'weakness'

Brighton could seemingly sense that this was a United XI there for the taking and there is no letting up in the fixture list for Mourinho, who must welcome Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham next Monday.

"United have been weak, losing individual battles. (Andreas) Pereira and Fred, what kind of midfield players are they?" Graeme Souness lambasted them on Sky Sports.

"They’re just happy to keep possession and go square all the time. Prior to Fergie going to United, this is the most average group of players I’ve ever seen at the club.

"They’ve got absolutely nothing about them. They’ve got no presence or anything and there just doesn’t seem to be any leaders out there pointing fingers."

While it's too early in the campaign to talk of a nadir in Mourinho's reign, there was something particularly chaotic about this performance.
