Gary Neville tore into Ed Woodward on Monday Night Football

West Bromwich Albion v Arsenal - Premier League

It wasn’t the greatest of summers for Manchester United - and it hasn’t been a good start of the season, either.

During the off-season, Jose Mourinho was constantly complaining about his side’s preparations for the new season which included a 4-1 thrashing by Liverpool in the United States.

And with Fred being the only high-profile signing of the transfer window, the Portuguese boss appeared at breaking point before the season had even started.

While a narrow win against Leicester got United off to a decent start, their 3-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday was simply terrible.

And it’s prompted an inquest from fans and pundits alike about the situation at Old Trafford right now.

And Gary Neville decided to focus on CEO Ed Woodward on Monday Night Football.

In a pretty lengthy rant, Neville slammed Woodward for “undermining” Mourinho and his body language after the Brighton loss.

“Woodward trying to justify to the media why he’s not backed the manager, it undermines Jose [Mourinho]… it’s been messy…,” Neville said.

“The CEO of the football club sat in his spot for two minutes after the game and I don't want to see him do that. At the end of the game, stand up, shake the hands of the opposition, tell him well done, smile and be bigger than that.”

“Mourinho wanted Maguire and Alderweireld and the club haven’t given them to him, if they played yesterday those defensive mistakes weren’t happening. Ed Woodward is brilliant off the pitch but he has to put a football structure beneath him that is serious.

“The Club need serious footballing people who know how to make decisions about football. Moyes was sacked in the middle of the season, LvG was sacked after winning the FA Cup, Mourinho isn’t a typical United manager. The clubs structure has gone out the window.”

Manchester City v Chelsea - Premier League

That’s what we love about Neville - he doesn’t hold back.

And Man Utd fans completed agreed with Neville and thoroughly enjoyed his rant. Check out the reaction on social media:

Incidentally, Woodward entered the Man Utd dressing room after the loss to Brighton on Sunday.

He presumably wanted a chat with Mourinho, who was busy doing his media duties.

Woodward then left before Mourinho returned. Exactly what Woodward wanted to say is unknown…
