Footballing royalty and the real royals will meet each other once again this winter with David Beckham announcing that he is joining Prince Harry in support of the Invictus Games.

Beckham has confirmed that he will be an ambassador for the Games this October and is expected to make the trip Down Under alongside the Prince and Duchess of Sussex.

This year's Invictus Games will see more than 500 forces veterans, who have suffered physical and psychological illnesses, from 18 nations competing across 11 sports in Sydney from the 20th to the 27th of October.

This announcement sees a continuation of the friendship between the Beckhams and Princes Harry and William with the Beckhams having attended both of their weddings.

Beckham made the announcement on Instagram saying he was 'incredibly proud' to be involved with the event.

"I've been lucky enough to meet and work with many serving, veteran and wounded British armed forces personnel over the years and I've been humbled by the courage, resilience and spirit shown by each and every one of them.

"The entire Invictus Games team, led by the Duke of Sussex, has achieved remarkable things in such a short space of time, using sport as a powerful force to rehabilitate and unite and I can't wait to be part of the energy and the excellence of the Games this year."

The first Invictus Games was held in London in 2014 and was the brainchild of Prince Harry himself following the Prince's visit to the USA Warrior Games in 2013.

Speaking at the launch, the Prince said, via The Telegraph, that the Games would "demonstrate the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and demonstrate life beyond disability."

Beckham joins a host of Australians who have also been announced as ambassadors for the Games, including Olympic gold medalists Anna Meares and Ian Thorpe.
