Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher traded blows in a fascinating discussion on Monday Night Football ahead of Crystal Palace's 2-0 defeat to Liverpool. The Sky Sports pundits were discussing new Arsenal boss Unai Emery following the Gunners' consecutive defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea.Carragher believed the Spanish manager, who was at PSG and Sevilla previously, needs to fit around English football so he can get results quickly.Neville, on the other hand, insisted he should stick with his way of playing or risk being seen as weak by his squad. What many fans may not have realised, however, is that the debate was actually started by Sam Allardyce. The veteran manager had criticised Emery for trying to play the ball out from the back against City and believed he should have adapted his style of play.

Neville calls Big Sam 'ignorant'

"I think it's ignorant to suggest he has to adapt," Neville hit back.

"Unai Emery is coming into this football club and has had six weeks to work. Emery has been a coach for 10 years and has been successful.

"He has his idea. The players have to adapt to him."

Much of his ammunition was aimed at Carragher but Neville's swipe at Allardyce has not gone unnoticed.

Allardyce responds

"Why he quite had a dig, I'm not that sure, but of course Gary is very open in his own opinion," Allardyce has retorted on talkSPORT.

"Let me say this. I've managed seven Premier League clubs and over 1000 games - do you think I'm entitled to my opinion? I think so.

“So like I said, Gary is Gary, and in the end he thinks he’s always right, that’s probably the reason why he said it.

“But at the end of the day, people ask me for my opinion and I say what I see, I always give my honest opinion."

Neville pleaded with Arsenal to give Arsene Wenger's successor a few weeks before judging him, but Allardyce pointed out that time is a luxury most managers do not get to enjoy.

“He talks about me having to win five games to save a club from relegation, I never got five or six weeks [like Emery at Arsenal]," he added.

"If I don’t get a result in five weeks, the club I take over is relegated – so I have to do it in days.

“I have to work out the players immediately and convince all of them we have to turn results around immediately.

“So he’s not right in what he said, but Gary is Gary – he’s got his opinion and I’ve got mine.”

Only time will tell whether Neville or Allardyce was right on Emery, whose Arsenal side will attempt to put their first points on the board by beating West Ham this weekend.
