Liverpool have come a long, long way under Jurgen Klopp.

Give or take the club's title challenge in 2013-14, it had been a seriously tough period for the Reds before Klopp stepped out on the Anfield turf in October 2015.

Brendan Rodgers had been newly sacked after a 1-1 draw at Everton and Klopp was selected as the man to win the club's first Premier League title.

He inherited a squad that was disjointed and had no shortage of deadwood, something that looks remarkable now given their title aspirations three seasons later.

Looking back at that first season under Klopp goes to show how proud Liverpool fans can feel about their current set-up and the future to come.

Exeter City 2-2 Liverpool

So, it makes it an appropriate time to reflect on the 2015-16 campaign and arguably the nadir of that campaign was the January trip to Exeter City.

Klopp took the decision to play an experimental starting XI at St. James' Park that night, with the Reds avoiding defeat against their League Two opponents with a 2-2 draw.

With so many bit-players and youth squad members in the team, though, it's incredibly interesting to see how their careers have fared since.

In fact, by the time the final whistled sounded, it was Liverpool's youngest team in their history.

Check out the starting XI below:

GK - Adam Bogdan

Ah yes, the goalkeeper so good he conceded directly from a corner kick in this very game. The Hungarian shot stopper never made another appearance for Liverpool after that season and currently finds himself out on loan with Hibernian.

RB - Connor Randall

Fresh from a loan spell with Shrewsbury Town, Randall made six first-team appearances across 2015-16 but never made a breakthrough. Accumulated 27 appearances for Hearts last season and likely awaits another loan spell at 22-years-old.

CB - Jose Enrique

One of just three appearances during his final season at Liverpool, the Spaniard would move to Real Zaragoza at the end of the season. Sadly, however, he has struggled with health problems recently and is now recovering from surgery to remove a brain tumour.

CB - Tiago Ilori

Rodgers signed the Portuguese centre-back in 2013 for £7 million and there was great optimism around the youngster. Nevertheless, he never made his name at Liverpool and was eventually shipped out to Reading four years later.

LB - Brad Smith

What a night to remember for Smith. The left-back delivered the equalising goal in the 73rd minute for his first senior strike and went on to provide an assist in the replay. Bournemouth snapped him up in the summer of 2016 and he is now making inroads in the club's first-team.

RM - Ryan Kent

Kent has only made a single appearance for Liverpool and that came on this January night in Devon. The now 21-year-old still resides at Anfield and will be looking to launch his career under Steven Gerrard at Rangers after time with Freiburg and Bristol City.

CM - Cameron Brannagan

Seventeen years in the Liverpool academy eventually came to an end this summer and his Exeter cameo was one of just nine outings for the Reds. After a season on loan with Fleetwood Town, he made a permanent move to Oxford United for an undisclosed fee.

CM - Kevin Stewart

Seen as a shrewd coup from Liverpool when he signed from Tottenham's academy in 2014, things didn't really work out for Stewart on Merseyside. He was another player to join the loan merry-go-round, before eventually dismounting last summer for Hull City.

LM - Joao Carlos Teixeira

Texeira enjoyed a decent performance in the West Country but impressed even more during the replay, finding the scoresheet as part of a 3-0 victory. The winger then made a move to Porto in 2016 - a move that ultimately failed - before switching to Vitoria this summer.

ST - Christian Benteke

Benteke only plied his trade at Liverpool for a single season and Klopp had to manage him for the majority of it. Ten strikes in 42 appearances represented a standard goal return and he moved onto Crystal Palace for whom he still players.

ST - Jerome Sinclair

The other goalscorer on the night but that goal at St. James' Park was both his first and last for Liverpool. The 21-year-old was determined to stay in the Premier League, moving to Watford, and will spend this season out on loan at Sunderland.

Sub one - Pedro Chirivella

Made five appearances during the 2015-16 season, yet currently finds himself in limbo after loan spells with away with Go Ahead Eagles and Willem II.

Sub two - Sheyi Ojo

One of few players in the squad still on the books at Liverpool, the 21-year-old's future currently hangs in the balance as the club decides whether or not to loan him out again.

Sub three - Joe Maguire

Since making an appearance for Liverpool that night in Exeter, Maguire has tumbled down the English football period and has played for Fleetwood Town since 2017.
