Daniel Ricciardo's decision to leave Red Bull after four years with the constructor has been questioned by teammate Max Verstappen.

The Dutch driver seemingly took aim at the Aussie for not being "patient" and waiting for Red Bull to deliver a competitive car capable of winning championships and races.

Having sparked a chain of drivers confirming moves over the summer break, Ricciardo confirmed his departure, leaving Red Bull with seven wins and 29 podiums.

While his teammate takes on a new venture, Verstappen will also be experiencing change with the Milton Keynes-based constructor.

After constant failures with Renault and a continuing struggle to catch the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers, Red Bull will gamble with Honda next year, despite McLaren's troubles with the supplier.

However, the four-time race winner remains confident he can challenge over the course of next year's season.

He said: "Of course everybody has moments in their career where you're frustrated or you're not happy with the current situation.

"I think everybody here wants to win races or wants to win championships, but sometimes it's not like that and you have to really be patient and work hard for it.

"Sometimes you need the whole package to come together and that's what Red Bull is working on at the moment and I'm confident that they can deliver a car which is capable of winning every race.

"We just need the whole package and we're working towards that so that's why it was also a little bit of a surprise for me that he left.

"If it is a change of scenery, I'm not sure if it's the best scenery to go to..."

Despite switching to Renault for a more competitive car, Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul has admitted it's unlikely Ricciardo will win a race next season, targeting the championship a couple of years later.

Formula One action returns this weekend in Belgium after the summer break.
