Love it or hate it, it looks like VAR is finally here to stay.

After a somewhat controversial World Cup debut, VAR looks to have caught the eye of the powers that be at UEFA.

The European governing body announced this week that they too will be employing the system from the quarter-finals and onward in the Champions League.

The announcement caused a bit of a stir, with critics questioning why they would use the controversial system during the business end of the tournament.

However, others lauded the decision, with the belief that it would help eradicate any question of doubt as to who really is the best team on the continent.

Real Madrid and Juventus were involved in an ugly brawl last season after a last gasp penalty decision sent the Spaniards through and ultimately to European glory.

Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon was sent off in the fracas that followed the decision but if VAR had been in use, the situation would have been easily diffused.

Scenes like that, make UEFA’s decision more than understandable.

One such player who is all for the introduction of VAR is former Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal.

Now plying his trade at Barcelona, Vidal has been on the wrong end of some very questionable refereeing decisions in the Champions League over the years and it is no surprise he has come out in support of the decision.

That infamous quarter-final between Real Madrid and Bayern in 2016/17 springs to mind immediately - a game which the Bavarian’s struggled to believe they had lost.

Vidal was given a straight red card during extra time in the second leg and, even though replays showed he got the ball, Madrid eventually cruised to victory.

Now Vidal, speaking about the introduction of VAR to Europe’s premier club competition has made a bold claim.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Vidal made it clear that he wishes VAR had come into use earlier in his career.

“With the VAR, Bayern Munich would have won two more Champions Leagues.”

Interesting.

While you can’t say for certain that the Germans would have gone on to win it if decisions had gone their way, you can see where Vidal is coming from.

Having swapped Germany for Spain, Vidal is determined to finally get his hands on that famous old trophy, declaring he wants to win it all at Barcelona, while making it clear what the true desire of his heart is.

“I want to win everything with Barcelona. My favourite title is the Champions League.”

With Barcelona, there is always a chance.
